Judith Lagat – Cheli & Peacock Safaris

RJZ: What is your personal favourite destination?

JL: It is still Kenya – specifically Laikipia and further north. The exclusivity of game viewing there is unmatched. You are often alone, exploring unique cultures like the Samburu and Pokot. The scenery is breathtaking. Activities range from walking and cycling to scenic helicopter rides. One client even described their helicopter trip as the best day of their life.


Future of Luxury Tourism

RJZ: How do you see Kenya’s luxury tourism evolving over the next 10-20 years?

JL: The future is about experiences, not just five-star properties. Travelers want quality stays, eco-friendly destinations, and community impact. Sustainability and climate action will shape luxury tourism. Younger travellers prioritize these values. It is less about star ratings and more about authenticity, community support, and leaving a positive impact. This direction aligns with the ethos behind Cheli and Peacock safaris.


Memorable Experiences

RJZ: Share a memorable experience from your travels or with a client.

JL: One unforgettable experience was a gorilla trek in Rwanda. Despite advising guests to prepare, I did not have the right boots or gear. I ended up trekking to the farthest gorilla family. It was tough, but unforgettable. The Rwandan team was worried, but I made it!


Journey to Leadership

RJZ: Tell us about your journey to becoming a leader at Cheli and Peacock.

JL: I am a mother, wife, and conservationist with nearly 30 years in travel. Selling East Africa is my passion. I believe in giving back and ensuring guests leave happy. Resilience, dedication, and constant learning have been my path. Integrity and trust are essential in this industry. You are selling experiences, not products, so delivering on promises is crucial. Exceeding expectations defines success in Cheli and Peacock Kenya.
