Pinnacle Point Golf Course, South Africa

Interview with Quintin Byleveldt

Welcome to Keep Travelling

Rael Zieve: Welcome to Keep Travelling, your go-to podcast for African tourism insights. Today, I’m joined by Quintin Byleveldt, Director of Golf at Pinnacle Point Golf Course.

Quintin Byleveldt: Thanks, Rael. Great to be here.

Where is Pinnacle Point Golf Estate?

Quintin: We’re in the Southern Cape, South Africa. A four-hour drive from Cape Town, or a 45-minute drive from George Airport. It’s easily accessible for both local and international visitors.

International Visitors at Pinnacle Point Golf Course

Rael: Do you get a lot of foreign visitors?

Quintin: Absolutely! Our biggest market is European, especially Germans, Swedes, and UK-based golfers. We’re also expanding into the U.S. market.

A Day in the Life of a Golf Director

Quintin: My day starts early—checking the Pinnacle Point Golf Course, ensuring our five-star experience. From pristine carts to a well-stocked pro shop, we focus on world-class service. Our efforts have earned us accolades, even competing globally with courses like Pebble Beach and St. Andrews.

The Rise of Pinnacle Point Golf Estate

Rael: How did Pinnacle Point Estate Mossel Bay reach this level?

Quintin: It’s been a journey. After opening in 2006, the estate faced financial troubles but was revived by homeowners in 2014. I joined in 2017, bringing experience from Sun City. With an exceptional greenkeeper and a strong team, we’ve elevated course standards, competing with the likes of Fancourt and Leopard Creek.

Pro Golfers Who Visit Pinnacle Point Golf Course

Rael: Do top professionals visit?

Quintin: Definitely! Louis Oosthuizen, an ambassador, runs the Louis 57 Foundation here. Other pros like Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, and Dean Burmester visit often. Even Gary Player has played here. We’re still working on getting Ernie Els out!

Membership at Pinnacle Point Estate Mossel Bay

Rael: What’s involved in becoming a member?

Quintin: Membership is very affordable, starting at R10,500 for homeowners and R13,500 for outsiders. The premium unlimited package is R55,000. New members need nominations from two current members and must be approved by a committee.

Golf Carts Over Caddies

Rael: Do you allow caddies?

Quintin: Not really. We’re a cart-based course, ensuring smooth play and convenience.

Living at Pinnacle Point Golf Estate

Rael: Do homeowners need golf memberships?

Quintin: No, unlike some estates. Residents can enjoy the views and amenities without needing to play golf.

Developing Young Talent Through the Academy

Rael: How’s the talent coming through at the Louis 57 Academy?

Quintin: We’ve produced top players like Jordan Dumony, Martin Forster, Christo Lamprecht, and Aldrich Potgieter, who’s now on the PGA Tour. The academy’s main goal is to grow the sport, and these success stories are a great bonus.

Staffing and Training at Pinnacle Point Golf Course

Rael: How do you develop staff?

Quintin: We recruit locally, ensuring strong community ties. Many of our operational staff are golfers themselves, making them excellent ambassadors for Pinnacle Point Golf Estate.

Climate Change and Course Maintenance

Rael: Has climate change impacted course maintenance?

Quintin: Water is key. While some courses struggle with restrictions, Pinnacle Point Estate Mossel Bay uses recycled water, making us sustainable. Temperature shifts are noticeable, but our consistent climate helps.

Funny Golfing Moments

Rael: Any memorable experiences?

Quintin: Plenty! One standout was at Sun City’s Lost City Golf Course. A tourist nearly walked into a crocodile den! Luckily, we intervened in time.

A Dream Visit to The Masters

Rael: How was your trip to The Masters?

Quintin: Incredible! Seeing the course in person was surreal. I followed Charl Schwartzel every day and was amazed by Augusta’s elevation changes and pristine beauty.

Exclusive Giveaway – Win a Round at Pinnacle Point!

Rael: Any special giveaways for our listeners?

Quintin: We’re offering a four-ball round at Pinnacle Point Golf Course! Just visit our website or Facebook page to enter.

Rael: Thanks, Quintin! Listeners, don’t miss out—check the show notes for details. Tune in next week for our chat with Taryn Lanjopoulis from Beachcomber Resorts. Keep travelling!
