My interview this week was with Malemia Banda who is the General Manager Tongabezi Lodge by Green Safaris. It was very apparent that this homegrown Zambian talent is very passionate about Tongabezi Safari Lodge. He has taken the golden opportunity given to him at Tongabezi safaris and holds a high level of service for his guests. It seemed to me during our discussion that he leads by example when it comes to marshalling his troops around their duties at Tongabezi Safari Lodge.

Personal Travel Recommendations
RJZ: What is your personal favourite destination, inside or outside Zambia?
MB: Zambia has incredible national parks, but I recommend South Luangwa National Park, where I grew up. It is stunning and rich in wildlife. I have also visited Lower Zambezi National Park and spent four years managing a camp in Kafue National Park. Visitors should consider adding a safari to South Luangwa to their itinerary when visiting Tongabezi safari lodge.
A Memorable Guest Experience
RJZ: Can you share a memorable personal experience with a guest or wildlife?
MB: One memorable experience was arranging a surprise marriage proposal at Tongabezi Lodge by Green Safaris. We set up a floating dining platform on the Zambezi River. As the couple enjoyed their dinner, our staff serenaded them, and the proposal was a success. Moments like these make us feel part of guests’ special memories.
Malemia’s Journey to Tongabezi Safari Lodge
RJZ: Tell me a little about your background and role at Tongabezi Lodge.
MB: I grew up near South Luangwa National Park and began my career in 2001 at a safari lodge. I worked for various lodges, including Sanctuary Retreats under Abercrombie and Kent, before joining Green Safaris in 2018. After four years managing Kafue National Park, I became the General Manager at Tongabezi Lodge by Green Safaris in 2023. I oversee operations at both Tongabezi and Sindabezi Island Camp, ensuring every guest has an unforgettable experience.
RJZ: Thank you for sharing, Malemia.
